How often do you hear someone saying, “You need to rest” or “Remember to take some time off”?  In a culture that celebrates productivity and hustle, true rest can feel like a guilty pleasure rather than a vital part of staying well and working well.

Rest isn’t a luxury.  It’s a necessity.  Just like our phones, we can’t run on 5% battery forever – we need time to recuperate, recharge and reset.  And yet, in a world full of distractions, deadlines and dopamine hits, rest often falls to the bottom of the list.

In my coaching, I talk about the three budgets we all juggle: time, money and energy.  Most of us are pretty good at budgeting time and money, but energy?  Not so much.  We reach for sugar, coffee or a quick scroll through social media to feel better.  But these are just short bursts.  They don’t replenish the tank – they just keep us limping along.

Real rest involves creating space – time away from the routine, from the rush, from the relentless to-do list.  In June 2025, at the start of the summer, I took myself on a retreat.  Not a holiday tagged onto work or squeezed in between projects, but a full week away for song writing – my version of joy and creativity.  It was a complete reboot.  The change of scene gave me space to reflect and rest.  And here’s the key:  I booked two days off afterwards.

Why?  Because I didn’t want to land back in real life with a bump.  Those extra days gave me time to review, reflect on the experience and to slowly reintegrate.  That pause meant I could carry the retreat’s benefits with me, rather than letting them evaporate as soon as I reopened my inbox.

It’s taken time, but I’ve learned to honour the seasons in my work and my energy.  My business has natural ebbs and flows – like fields needing fallow time – and I build in rest accordingly.  Spring gives me a surge of energy.  Summer is slower and more reflective.  Autumn bears fruit from the summer projects.  Winter invites hibernation, a slower pace and often some deep thinking.  Learning your own seasonal rhythm will help you to plan your workload, your breaks and your creative bursts more effectively.

Rest isn’t about doing ‘nothing’.  It’s about retreating – stepping back to gain perspective.  At home, it’s all too easy to see the chores piling up – the decorating that needs to be done, or the washing machine that’s just beeped.  That’s not rest.  That’s just another routine.  A proper retreat – whether it’s a full week or a few hours – takes you out of your day-to-day environment.  It disrupts the rhythm just enough to create space for insight.

For some of my clients, it starts small:  a Sunday afternoon off without guilt or booking a couple of quiet days after a big event.  Others come to me because they’ve forgotten what a proper weekend even feels like.  Their Saturdays are full of catch-up tasks, and by Sunday afternoon, they’re already mentally prepping for Monday.  Their ‘weekend’ barely lasts 24 hours.
