The word ‘journey’ is everywhere. You hear it on every reality show – “I’ve been on such a journey!” – and it’s easy to roll your eyes.  But when I think about the people I work with, that word really does fit.  Coaching is, at its heart, a journey – one that begins long before my clients and I even meet.

When Something Feels “Not Quite Right”

Often, it starts with a niggling feeling that something isn’t quite right.  Nothing dramatic.  Just that quiet sense of unease that whispers, “This isn’t working for me anymore.”  Many of my clients describe it as wearing a mask at work.  They are showing up as the version of themselves they think others expect, rather than feeling relaxed and confident in who they truly are.

For some, that looks like sitting in a board meeting and suggesting an idea, only for it to be ignored until someone else repeats it.  For others, it’s feeling invisible, overlooked for promotion, or simply stuck – working hard but not moving forward.  These are bright, capable professionals doing everything ‘right’ on paper, yet still feeling blocked or unfulfilled.

Why Self-Help Isn’t Enough

That’s when the search for solutions begins.  Many start with self-help books or online resources.  While those can offer useful tips, they rarely tackle the underlying issues.  I remember doing the same myself years ago when I was a stressed and burnt-out finance director.  I devoured books on managing stress, but all they really did was remind me how stressed I was!  None of them got to the heart of why I felt that way or what needed to change.

That’s where coaching comes in.  You can’t ask a book to reflect your specific circumstances back to you; but you can do that in a coaching conversation.  Coaching provides the space to explore what’s really going on beneath the surface, identify the patterns that keep you stuck and discover what needs to shift for lasting change.

Jennie’s Journey

Jennie is one of my clients.  She came to me feeling frustrated, overlooked and exhausted.  She worked long hours, often taking her laptop on holiday ‘just in case’, unable to switch off for fear of letting her team down.  Despite her dedication, she felt invisible.  It was as though her hard work counted for nothing.  She knew something had to change but didn’t know where to start.

Over six months of working together, Jennie transformed how she saw herself and her role.  She became more confident and self-assured, with colleagues commenting on how much more relaxed she seemed and how valued her contributions were.  She rediscovered her voice in meetings, began trusting her team to deliver without her constant oversight.  She even took a proper holiday, without her laptop!  Her efforts were recognised and before long she was promoted.

A Journey Worth Taking

Jenny’s story is typical of many of my clients.  Their journey starts with frustration and self-doubt.  With the right support, it becomes one of growth, confidence and fulfilment.  The path isn’t always smooth, but it’s worth every step.

If Jennie’s story resonates with you, don’t reach for another self-help book.  Book a call with me instead.  Let’s have a conversation and see where your journey might lead.  Maybe you recognise Jennie’s story in someone else.  Who do you know who is struggling, like she was?  A friend who’s cancelled the last few nights out because of work?  A colleague who says they haven’t got time for a break?  They may just need a nudge to start their own journey too.

Message me directly, book a call with me and let’s look at the next steps on your journey.
